HANOI — Vietnam has removed the death penalty for eight crimes, including espionage, embezzlement, bribery, and attempting to overthrow the government, cutting the capital crimes list from 18 to 10 starting July.
Convictions for these offences will now carry a maximum life sentence. Officials said the move aligns with evolving socio-economic conditions and strengthens international cooperation.
Those already sentenced to death for these crimes will have their sentences reduced to life imprisonment.
