Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has dismissed rumours that he’s stepping aside in the upcoming state election. Speaking to Malay Mail, he confirmed he will defend his Lamag seat and is eyeing the chief minister post.
“How to be chief minister if I don’t contest?” he said, denying claims he’s making way for his son.
Bung warned that removing him would risk Umno’s revival in Sabah, claiming credit for rebuilding the party from 400,000 to 615,000 members since its 2018 collapse.
Despite internal rifts, including tensions with deputy Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and past friction with Tun Musa Aman, Bung said party unity is under control. Still, he stressed candidates must be “winnable,” even if that upsets some division chiefs.
He dismissed any alliance with GRS, citing past betrayal, but remained open to cooperation with Pakatan Harapan. Bung criticised the GRS-led government for poor infrastructure delivery and said his rural roots make him better suited to meet the people’s needs.
“I know what Sabahans need: roads, water, electricity, internet — I can deliver,” he said.
