WASHINGTON — The US Senate is moving closer to voting on Donald Trump’s massive “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping and divisive spending plan that extends tax cuts, boosts border security, and slashes social welfare programs.
The bill would cost $4.5 trillion and cut Medicaid, potentially leaving 8.6 million low-income Americans without healthcare. It also rolls back renewable energy incentives and is projected to widen the wealth gap.
Despite Trump's push to pass the bill by July 4, Republican divisions and Democratic opposition have delayed progress. Debate formally began Saturday after procedural delays, with two Republicans siding with Democrats to oppose it.
The bill must pass both chambers in identical form. Critics, including Elon Musk, have slammed the proposal as destructive and regressive. Public polling shows it is unpopular across most demographics.
