KUALA LUMPUR — The first driverless train for the Johor Bahru-Singapore RTS Link was officially unveiled today at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) in Tuas. Testing will begin in July at the new S$800 million (RM2.6 billion) facility.
The four-car, 76.5-metre-long train was showcased in the presence of Singapore’s Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke, and Johor MB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
RTS Operations (RTSO), a joint venture between Malaysia’s Prasarana and Singapore’s SMRT, is managing the project. System installation is currently 56% complete, with track laying set to finish by end-July.
Built by China’s CRRC Zhuzhou, each train can carry up to 1,087 passengers and includes features like foldable seats for wheelchairs and prams, emergency call buttons, fire detectors, and hearing aid-compatible announcements.
Following system integration tests at SRTC, simulation trials will run from Woodlands North to Bukit Chagar until the third quarter of 2026. The remaining seven trains will be tested in Johor once assembled. The RTS Link will run at speeds up to 80kph and carry 10,000 passengers per hour each way across the 4km route.
