ISTANBUL — Turkish authorities have arrested 10 people over wildfires that erupted nationwide over the past week, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said Friday.
At least two people died in Izmir as firefighters, aided by planes and helicopters, battled blazes fueled by high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity.
Since June 26, 65 fires have been reported, some linked to welding, farm machinery, and burning garden waste near forests. Legal action against 15 more suspects is ongoing, Yerlikaya added.
Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said nine of 10 active fires on Friday were largely under control, while efforts in Hatay province continued overnight.
