JOHOR BARU — Faced with soaring COE prices and car ownership limits in Singapore, more Singaporeans are snapping up luxury and sports cars in Johor for weekend thrills, The Straits Times reported.
Entrepreneur Iylia Kwan, 36, drives a Toyota Corolla in Singapore but spends weekends cruising Malaysia’s highways in his RM50,000 used Porsche Cayenne. He recently added a second Malaysian car — a Mercedes-Benz E-Class — which he keeps at his rented house in Pasir Gudang.
Singapore bans citizens and PRs from driving foreign-registered vehicles locally, so many park their Malaysian cars in Johor, paying RM200–RM400 monthly for condo parking or using friends’ homes. Carlogy, a new 24,000 sq ft storage facility in Skudai, even offers air-conditioned parking and concierge services to meet demand.
Johor dealers report rising sales to Singaporeans lured by Malaysia’s far lower car prices. Buyers use these cars for leisure drives, motorsports, or errands across the border.
Experts caution owners to ensure proper registration and insurance to avoid legal issues.
