The federal government, through Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, reaffirmed its commitment to handling judicial independence transparently, following the Malaysian Bar’s recent 2.6 km walk to deliver a memorandum highlighting concerns of alleged interference in the judiciary.

Azalina emphasized that the government respects the Federal Constitution and existing laws, including the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2009, and is conducting a new comparative study on judicial appointments with input from the Malaysian Bar to improve transparency and credibility.

She also explained mechanisms to address judicial misconduct under Article 125 of the Constitution, including special tribunals, suspension of judges, and the Judges’ Ethics Committee guided by the Judges’ Code of Ethics 2009. These measures aim to uphold judicial independence, free from political influence, and maintain public confidence in the judiciary.
