Belgium’s Nina Derwael, the 2021 Olympic uneven bars champion, announced her retirement from gymnastics at 25, saying she had “achieved her goals” and didn’t want to put her body through further strain.
Derwael made history as Belgium’s first female Olympic gymnastics medalist, winning gold in Tokyo after two world titles on uneven bars. A three-time European uneven bars champion, she also claimed balance beam gold in Leipzig this year.
She narrowly missed a podium finish at the Paris Olympics, placing fourth after recovering from a serious shoulder injury.
