Zahid: Orang Asli Act to Be Amended, Inspired by Māori Empowerment Model
After 71 years, the Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954 will be amended, Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced during his visit to New Zealand. Drawing inspiration from Māori policies, the reform aims to strengthen Orang Asli rights in land ownership, education, and entrepreneurship.
Zahid stressed the need to adapt—not adopt—the NZ model, noting local realities must guide the changes. Amendments are in draft stage, with stakeholder consultations ongoing. The revised bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament by March next year.
He also met with New Zealand’s Māori Development Minister, exploring indigenous policy cooperation.
