Electricity theft for illegal bitcoin mining has caused **RM4.8 billion in losses since 2018, Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir reported. He highlighted an alarming increase in cases, with 2,399 recorded from 2023-2024 and 1,800 cases already this year (up to June). This surge is linked to the rising value of Bitcoin (over RM500,000 per unit). Following a joint operation that raided seven suspected premises, the Minister urged public cooperation in reporting illegal connections to combat this issue.
