A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska yesterday, 54 miles south of Sand Point, at a shallow depth of 12.5 miles. A tsunami warning was initially issued for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula but was later downgraded to an advisory and then completely withdrawn. A small tsunami of 0.2 feet was observed at Sand Point. The quake was followed by over a dozen aftershocks, with the largest measuring 5.2-magnitude. Authorities advised residents to remain cautious. Alaska is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and has a history of powerful earthquakes, including a 9.2-magnitude quake in 1964 that caused significant damage and loss of life. A 7.2-magnitude quake also occurred in July 2023 with no major damage.
