MACC Apology for Teoh Beng Hock's Death "Long Overdue," Says DAP
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has called the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) apology for the death of former political aide Teoh Beng Hock "long overdue," though welcomed as an act of transitional justice. This rare public apology by MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki marks the 16th anniversary of Teoh's death.
Teoh died in 2009 after a fall from the MACC headquarters while under investigation, an incident that sparked national outrage. Loke emphasized that despite the apology and a goodwill monetary contribution offer (which Teoh's family refused yesterday), the case is not closed. He stated that investigations by authorities, including the police, must continue until the full truth is revealed.
The government's offer of financial support for Teoh's 15-year-old child remains, with management entrusted to Teoh's widow, Madam Soh Cher Wei. Loke affirmed DAP's commitment to provide full legal support if new evidence emerges, extending deep respect and sorrow to the Teoh family as investigations are incomplete and have not met their expectations.
