WASHINGTON — Jeffrey Epstein’s 2019 jail suicide continues to fuel conspiracy theories among Donald Trump’s MAGA supporters, who believe he was silenced to protect powerful figures.
Epstein, a financier linked to elites including Trump, Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, and Prince Andrew, was convicted in 2008 for prostitution and charged again in 2019 with sex trafficking minors. He died before trial, which the coroner ruled a suicide.
Trump, who knew Epstein socially in the ’90s and early 2000s, has suggested Epstein might not have killed himself and promised to release related files. But a recent Justice Department memo confirmed suicide and denied any incriminating “client list,” angering Trump’s base.
Supporters accuse the government of hiding Epstein’s ties to the rich and powerful, sparking rare friction with Trump, who defended his attorney general and dismissed critics as “weaklings.”
Amid mounting pressure, Trump asked for grand jury transcripts on Epstein’s 2019 indictment to be unsealed. A judge will decide whether to release them, likely with redactions for privacy and security.
