Scottie Scheffler cruised to his first British Open title with a wire-to-wire, four-shot victory at Royal Portrush on Sunday, capping a dominant week with a clinical final-round 68. The world No. 1 never let his lead slip despite a rare double-bogey at the eighth, sealing his fourth major and moving within a U.S. Open of the career Grand Slam.

Harris English finished second on 13 under, while Rory McIlroy, hoping for a home-course miracle, tied seventh on 10 under alongside Xander Schauffele and Robert MacIntyre. China’s Li Haotong shared fourth at 11 under with Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark.

Scheffler, now the first player in over a century to win his first four majors by three or more strokes, became the first world No. 1 to win the Open since Tiger Woods in 2006. Despite a fleeting scare after his double-bogey, birdies at the ninth and 12th steadied his march to the Claret Jug.

“I know I wasn’t the fan favourite today, but thanks for all the support. It’s been a great week,” Scheffler said after an emotional embrace with his family on the 18th green.

McIlroy summed up the mood of the field: “He’s just been on another level.”
