A new French law allowing the return of acetamiprid a pesticide banned since 2018—has sparked widespread public outrage. Known for its harmful effects on pollinators like bees, the chemical's reintroduction under the "Duplomb law" has prompted a petition that gathered over 620,000 signatures by Saturday evening, making it the most-signed petition on the French Parliament’s website. The law, passed on July 8 but not yet in effect, aims to ease restrictions on farmers. While beet and hazelnut growers support the move, citing lack of alternatives and unfair competition, beekeepers warn the pesticide is deadly to bees. The petition’s author, 23-year-old student Eleonore Pattery, slammed the law as a "scientific and ethical disaster" and called for its immediate repeal and a citizen-led consultation involving health and environmental experts.Though the petition cannot directly overturn the law, surpassing 500,000 signatures may trigger a formal debate in the National Assembly.
