During ongoing tax negotiations with the US, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim affirmed that Malaysia will not compromise on its Bumiputera policy. While valuing strong trade and investment ties with the US, Anwar emphasized clear boundaries in talks and stressed that Malaysia’s national policies, including Bumiputera, must be respected. The discussions come after the US announced a 25% tariff on Malaysian goods starting August 1. The US Trade Representative (USTR) criticized Malaysia’s halal import rules and Bumiputera ownership requirements, citing them as trade barriers in its 2025 National Trade Estimate report. The report highlighted complex certification processes and foreign investment restrictions, especially the 30% Bumiputera ownership mandate in sectors like oil, gas, and media, as challenges raising costs and delaying exports.Anwar reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to its policies, rejecting US claims of discrimination and signaling readiness to face risks to protect national interests.
