Malaysia is set to sign the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime in October in Vietnam, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. This move aims to strengthen international cooperation with bodies like Interpol and the FBI, particularly for digital evidence exchange, joint investigations, and extradition of cybercriminals.

Saifuddin also revealed that 46,086 cybercrime investigations have been opened in 2024. To combat this, the ministry and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have implemented legislative amendments. Last year, Penal Code sections 424A and 424B were revised to increase penalties for certain offenses from RM1,000 to RM10,000, specifically targeting "mule accounts" used by scammers. Additionally, the Criminal Procedure Code was amended to allow sergeants to freeze or seize suspicious accounts, enabling earlier intervention in financial layering and stopping scam proceeds.
