SURIN — Over 100,000 people have fled their homes as the deadliest border conflict in a decade between Thailand and Cambodia escalates, prompting emergency UN Security Council talks.
Fighting erupted Thursday across six key locations involving tanks, jets, artillery, and ground troops. Cambodia reportedly fired rockets into Thai territory, damaging civilian areas including a hospital and petrol station. Thailand responded with airstrikes.
So far, 14 people have been killed—13 civilians and one soldier—as families rush to evacuate. The conflict, rooted in a long-standing border dispute, has also sparked a severe diplomatic fallout: both countries expelled ambassadors and downgraded ties.
The UN meeting was called at Cambodia’s request. Global powers, including the US, EU, France, and China, have urged an immediate ceasefire and called for peaceful dialogue.
