DAMASCUS — At least 12 people were killed and more than 100 injured after a series of explosions rocked a weapons and ammunition depot belonging to the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) in Maaret Misrin, northern Idlib, on Wednesday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Among the dead were a woman and a child. TIP, a jihadist group made up mainly of Uighur fighters, is active in Syria’s civil war.
Syria’s Health Ministry reported a slightly lower toll of seven deaths and 157 injuries. AFP images showed thick white smoke rising over the city, with children among the wounded.
The Interior Ministry has launched a full investigation to uncover the cause of the blast and hold those responsible accountable. Measures are being taken to prevent future incidents.
