BANGKOK — Fierce fighting along the Thailand-Cambodia border has left 14 dead and forced over 100,000 Thai residents from four border provinces into shelters, marking the deadliest military confrontation between the two nations in over a decade.
According to Thailand's military, Cambodian forces fired rockets and artillery into Thai territory, prompting the deployment of six Thai F-16 jets to strike two Cambodian military targets.
The long-standing dispute centers around the "Emerald Triangle" — the border region where Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos meet. Tensions recently reignited in May, following the death of a Cambodian soldier in a previous clash.
Cambodia’s defense ministry has yet to release an official casualty count. Meanwhile, civilians on the Cambodian side have begun fleeing border villages.
In response, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting. The EU, China, the U.S., and France have all voiced serious concern and urged immediate dialogue.
