PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN assembly in September, making it the first major European power to do so.

Macron emphasized that ending the war in Gaza and protecting civilians remains the top priority. He stressed the importance of establishing a Palestinian state with full recognition of Israel to ensure long-term regional security.

The move provoked strong criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called it a "reward for terror" and a threat to Israel’s existence, warning it could lead to another Iranian proxy similar to Gaza.

To date, at least 142 countries have recognized or plan to recognize Palestine, despite opposition from Israel and the U.S.

France’s decision follows a wave of recognition from countries like Norway, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia after Israel’s 2023 Gaza offensive triggered by Hamas’ October 7 attack.

Palestinian officials and Hamas welcomed Macron’s stance, calling it a step toward justice and urging more nations to follow suit. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also signaled readiness for discussions with European leaders about future recognition if a ceasefire is achieved.
