Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire and the withdrawal of their troops from their shared border, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said. He said the agreement was reached after telephone conversations with Thai acting Prime Minister Phumdum Vejjajayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen late on Tuesday.
He said he was grateful that both sides responded respectfully when he spoke to them, adding that both leaders had asked for more time to withdraw their troops already stationed at the border.
Malaysia currently chairs the regional grouping of ASEAN, of which Thailand and Cambodia are members. Reuters reported that Hun Sen supported Malaysia’s proposal for a ceasefire. But Thailand has rejected mediation efforts by third countries and insisted that the situation be resolved only through bilateral talks, the Thai Foreign Ministry said.
