India's Assam state is seeing a major crackdown on Bengali-speaking Muslims, with thousands of homes bulldozed and families evicted.Since May 2021, 50,000 people, mostly Bengali Muslims, have been evicted from 160 sq km of land. In the last month alone, 3,400 Bengali Muslim homes were destroyed.

Assam's Chief Minister attributes these actions to controlling "Muslim infiltration" from Bangladesh, claiming migrants will soon comprise 50% of the state's population.Critics, however, view these as politically motivated evictions and expulsions aimed at polarizing voters ahead of state elections.

Around 30,000 people in Assam have been declared "foreigners" by tribunals, and India has a list of over 2,300 individuals for deportation to Bangladesh. Human Rights Watch reports that India has unlawfully expelled hundreds of ethnic Bengali Muslims to Bangladesh without due process in recent weeks, with over 1,500 expelled between May and mid-June alone.
