A regional passenger train derailed in a wooded area near Riedlingen, southwestern Germany, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, killing three people and injuring several others. Around 100 passengers were on board when two carriages came off the tracks.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation, but German media reported that a landslide caused by severe storms in the region might be a factor. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed condolences and called for full support for emergency services.

The incident highlights ongoing criticisms of Germany's outdated rail infrastructure, which the government has pledged to modernize with significant investments. This derailment follows other fatal accidents in recent German history, including one in June 2022 that killed four, and the deadliest in 1998 which killed 101.
