KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai will have a swift chance to avenge their World Championships defeat to compatriots Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin when they meet in the second round of the Hong Kong Open tomorrow.
World No. 8 Soon Huat-Shevon overcame Taiwan's scratch pairing of Lin Bing Wei-Lin Jhih Yun 13-21, 23-21, 21-8 in the first round at the Hong Kong Coliseum today.
World No. 14 Pang Ron-Su Yin, meanwhile, cruised past Ukraine's world No. 59 Oleksii Titov-Yevheniia Kantemyr 21-14, 21-14 in just 24 minutes.
At the World Championships in Paris, Pang Ron-Su Yin stunned their senior teammates with a 13-21, 23-21, 21-17 win in the third round.
The youngsters have endured a dip in confidence this season despite ending last year strongly, capped by a runner-up finish at the China Masters.
However, their solid quarter-final run in Paris appears to have reignited their momentum.
National mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto has urged the pair to use their World Championships breakthrough as a springboard for greater consistency.
Veterans Soon Huat-Shevon, meanwhile, will be determined to reassert their authority in tomorrow's clash, with their head-to-head now tied at 1-1.
The husband-and-wife duo lifted two titles last year — the Swiss Open and Malaysia Masters — but are still searching for their first this year.
With the season entering its final stretch, they will be keen to get their hands on silverware.
