A 2024 report by women’s rights group SIS Forum (Malaysia) has revealed that the main reasons Muslim couples divorce in Malaysia are communication breakdown, domestic violence, and financial neglect by husbands. Based on findings from Telenisa, SIS’s free legal clinic which assisted 188 clients, poor communication was the most common issue cutting across all income, education, and geographic backgrounds. At the report launch, SIS communications manager Ameena Siddiqi noted that many women cited lack of dialogue about finances and unmet emotional needs. Unresolved conflicts were also found to be a major factor leading to separation.
