SINGAPORE — Three people were injured after part of a ceiling collapsed at Liat Towers on Singapore’s Orchard Road yesterday afternoon, CNA reported.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted at about 4pm.
Two of the injured were taken to Singapore General Hospital and one to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
The Singapore-based media organisation reported that a false ceiling beneath the outdoor steps, outside the acai bowl shop Swirl Lover, had fallen.
Based on widely shared images on social media, the area near a Starbucks outlet at street level was cordoned off, with police officers at the scene.
The Building and Construction Authority said the incident did not affect the building’s structural integrity.
“Preliminary findings show that the incident is localised and likely due to improper installation of the suspended ceiling,” it said.
Eyewitnesses told CNA the collapse happened suddenly and trapped several people.
One described helping to hold up the ceiling so others could crawl out, while another said a pregnant woman appeared to be among the injured.
Swirl Lover later posted on Instagram that it would close temporarily while investigations were carried out.
“We are praying for their protection, comfort, and a smooth and speedy recovery,” it said.
