Italian skier Matteo Franzoso has died at age 25 following a devastating crash during training in La Parva, Chile. He suffered a severe head injury after colliding with a fence and was placed in a medically induced coma in Santiago, but sadly passed away just days before his 26th birthday. Franzoso made his World Cup debut in 2021 and competed in 17 events, with his best result being 28th in the 2023 Cortina d'Ampezzo super-G. The Italian winter sports community is mourning yet another tragedy, less than a year after the death of junior champion Matilde Lorenzi. “This is a tragedy for his family and our sport,” said Italian federation president Flavio Roda, urging stronger safety measures. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) also expressed its deep condolences.
