Kylian Mbappe scored twice from the penalty spot as 10-man Real Madrid overcame early setbacks to defeat Marseille 2-1 in their Champions League opener. Los Blancos suffered an early blow when Trent Alexander-Arnold limped off with a suspected hamstring injury, and further trouble followed when substitute Dani Carvajal was sent off with 18 minutes left. Marseille took a first-half lead through Timothy Weah after Mason Greenwood dispossessed Arda Guler. But Mbappe quickly levelled from the spot after Rodrygo was fouled. Despite the red card, Real pressed on and were rewarded with a second penalty after a handball by Facundo Medina, which Mbappe converted to seal victory. Real, aiming to reclaim the European crown under new boss Xabi Alonso, next face Kairat on 30 September, while Marseille host Ajax.
