Japanese lawmaker Sanae Takaichi will campaign for the ruling party’s leadership with a platform focused on income tax cuts and direct cash payouts to households, according to the Nikkei. Aiming to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Takaichi also plans to advocate for a gradual reduction of Japan’s debt-to-GDP ratio. Viewed as a fiscal dove, she announced her candidacy for the October 4 Liberal Democratic Party leadership race on Thursday. Takaichi, who could become Japan’s first female prime minister, is considered a frontrunner alongside Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, as the party prepares to choose its next national leader.
