Hong Kong authorities evacuated around 6,000 residents from 18 buildings in Quarry Bay after discovering a 450-kilogram World War II bomb at a construction site. Believed to be fully functional, the unexploded ordnance posed a serious risk of mass casualties if mishandled. Over 2,800 residents were evacuated with police assistance before a bomb disposal operation began, expected to last 12 hours. Hong Kong, a key battleground during Japan’s WWII Asian campaign, occasionally sees such wartime remnants resurface. The bomb is similar to others found in the city’s Wan Chai district in 2018, underscoring ongoing risks from the region’s turbulent history.
