SINGAPORE — Singapore police are investigating a group of individuals who delivered letters to the Istana appealing for clemency for four men on death row, authorities confirmed today.

The incident occurred on September 13 at about 4.10pm, when the group handed over two letters addressed to Singapore’s president and the prime minister before leaving the grounds, the police told The Straits Times today.

An Instagram post that same day by the group Student Actions for Transformative Justice said it had submitted the letters seeking clemency for the four inmates.

The men — Jumaat Mohamed Sayed, Lingkesvaran Rajendaren, Datchinamurthy Kataiah and Saminathan Selvaraju — were convicted of drug trafficking between 2015 and 2018 and had their appeals dismissed between 2016 and 2020.

The police did not say whether any offences were suspected or what action might follow.

Singapore retains the death penalty for certain drug-related crimes despite calls from rights groups for reform.
