KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia capped a dominant group-stage campaign in style after defeating Australia 2-0 in their final Group C tie at the World Junior Mixed Team Championships, or the Suhadinata Cup, in Guwahati, India, today.
The fourth seeds, who had earlier scored straight-game wins over Slovakia and Canada, once again showcased their all-round depth under the new 45-point relay format, winning 45-35, 45-14 to top the group unbeaten and book their place in the quarter-finals.
Malaysia made a confident start with Loh Ziheng-Tan Zhi Yang giving the team a 9-5 lead in the boys' doubles, followed by Eng Ler Qi extending it to 18-11 in the girls' singles.
Joinne Lee-Nur Aina Maisarah kept the momentum going in the girls' doubles to make it 27-17, before Lim Boon Le stretched the gap to 36-24 in the boys' singles.
Ziheng-Noraqilah Maisarah then sealed the opener 45-35 in the mixed doubles.
Malaysia were ruthless in the second game as Damien Ling-Irfan Shazmir opened proceedings with a narrow 9-7 lead in the boys' doubles.
Lim Zhi Shin widened the gap to 18-8 in the girls' singles, and Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah continued the charge to 27-9 in the girls' doubles.
Ayu Fu Sheng added a commanding 36-10 cushion in the boys' singles before Datu Anif Isaac Datu Asrah-Nicole Tan wrapped up the tie 45-14 in the mixed doubles.
The real challenge, however, begins in the quarter-finals, where Malaysia are just one win away from assuring themselves of at least a bronze medal.
They could be drawn against the group champions of either China (Group D), Indonesia (Group F), or hosts India (Group H), making for a potentially testing route ahead.
