KUALA LUMPUR: National women's doubles stars Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah underlined their intent to go all the way at the Arctic Open in Finland with a dominant first-round performance todayday.
The world No. 2 hardly broke a sweat in dispatching Denmark's world No. 127 duo Natasja Anthonisen-Amelie Kudsk 21-13, 21-14 at Energie Areena in Vantaa.
Pearly-Thinaah will next take on Indonesia's world No. 27 combination Febriana Kusuma-Meilysa Puspitasari, who advanced after receiving a walkover in their opening round.
Pearly-Thinaah will fancy their chances, having beaten the Indonesians in both of their previous encounters this year, including a straight-game win at last month's China Masters.
Pearly-Thinaah are in Vantaa this week defending the runners-up points they earned last year, when they finished second behind long-time rivals and current world No. 1s Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning of China.
Fans are already anticipating a possible rematch between the two top pairs later in the week — a clash that would rekindle memories of their World Championships final meeting in Paris in August, where Pearly-Thinaah fell just short of capturing the historic crown.
