RANTAU PANJANG: The General Operations Force (GOF) has busted a diesel smuggling ring after seizing 40 jerry cans containing 1,000 litres of diesel, believed to be destined for neighbouring Thailand.
The diesel was confiscated by Battalion 7 in Kampung Dangar at 9am yesterday.
Southeast Brigade acting commander Assistant Commissioner Ijid Landu Binju, said the seizure followed the interception of a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
"The suspect, who was also the driver, fled on foot, abandoning the vehicle by the roadside.
"Upon inspection, 40 jerry cans containing an estimated 1,000 litres of diesel were found inside the vehicle, believed to be intended for smuggling into Thailand.
"The total estimated value of the seizure, including the vehicle, is RM42,900. The items have been handed over to the Pasir Mas Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) for further action," he said.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
The diesel smuggling activity is fuelled by cheaper diesel prices in Malaysia and higher costs of the commodity in Thailand.
