KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia bounced back from the 7-2 loss to Pakistan on Saturday to hold Australia to a 1-1 draw in the Under-21 Sultan of Johor Cup (SoJC) at Taman Daya Stadium today.

Malaysia put up a better performance this time against heavyweights Australia, and the national juniors showed that they have the ability to play well.

Malaysia, preparing for the Junior World Cup in India from Nov 28-Dec 10, got off to a bright start by taking the lead off a penalty corner, converted by Azimuddin Kamaruddin in the 13th minute.

Malaysia, who finished last in the SoJC last year, created many scoring chances but just could not increase their lead.

Two-time champions Australia, who outplayed New Zealand 4-0 on Saturday, equalised off their fourth penalty corner, converted by Ian Grobbelaar in the 47th minute.

Coach Nor Saiful Zaini, who has set a podium target for his team, said: "I am very satisfied that they came back from the defeat to Pakistan. We took the lead and almost won the game. That is a positive thing for the players.

"They have learned how to play against Australia. They are brave and believe they can play against a team like Australia," added Saiful.

In an earlier match, three-time champions India outplayed New Zealand 4-2 to register their second win after edging defending champions Great Britain 3-2 in their opening game.
