SINGAPORE — A 52-year-old woman who fatally stabbed her husband during a scuffle at a void deck in Ang Mo Kio last year was sentenced to 31 months’ jail on Tuesday.
According to CNA, Baniyah Shap, a Singaporean, admitted to seven charges including a rash act causing death, possession of a foldable knife, and perverting the course of justice by washing and hiding the weapon after the stabbing.
The court heard that Baniyah’s husband, 62-year-old Ali Saaban, had followed her to the void deck after an argument at home before a confrontation broke out.
An autopsy later revealed that he died from bleeding caused by a stab wound to his right femoral artery.
According to court documents, the incident began on December 11, 2023, when the couple were drinking with neighbours before a quarrel erupted later that night.
During the altercation, Ali reportedly grabbed Baniyah from behind, leading to a struggle in which she swung a foldable knife and struck his thigh.
Witnesses tried to assist the victim as he bled heavily, while Baniyah returned home to clean and hide the knife before coming back to the scene with a blanket.
She was heard shouting at bystanders not to call the police or ambulance, claiming she could take care of her husband herself.
Ali was later taken to hospital but died the next day despite resuscitation attempts.
The prosecution argued that Baniyah’s actions were “deliberately rash” and showed a “blatant disregard for human life,” citing her efforts to conceal the weapon and prevent aid.
Besides the stabbing-related charges, Baniyah also faced unrelated offences involving bank accounts later linked to scam activities, with eight other counts taken into consideration.
For causing death by a rash act, she faced a maximum penalty of five years in jail, a fine, or both.
