SINGAPORE — A 56-year-old woman died yesterday after falling from a height at Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport, CNA reported.
Jewel Changi Airport is a large mixed-use complex connected to Singapore’s Changi Airport. It combines retail, dining, leisure, and airport facilities under one striking glass-and-steel dome.
Opened in 2019, Jewel is best known for the Rain Vortex — the world’s tallest indoor waterfall — surrounded by a lush indoor forest known as the Shiseido Forest Valley.
Police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received calls for assistance at around 1.55pm at 78 Airport Boulevard. SCDF said the woman was taken to Changi General Hospital unconscious, where she later died. Police confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Lee Ching Wern, CEO of Jewel Changi Airport Development, said in a statement to CNA: “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred and extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We are working closely with the authorities to provide our full support in their investigations.”
An eyewitness told the Singapore-based news outlet that they were cleaning their store on Level 2 when they heard a “thud”.
“I didn’t think too much about it, in my mind I was hoping ‘God forbid it was something bad that happened’, but my coworker went out to take a look and saw the body on the ground,” the eyewitness said.
The woman fell near a seating area, and the eyewitness said no one else appeared to have been injured. A video shared on TikTok by @sgseewhatsee showed someone performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the person while several bystanders gathered around. Mall employees, dressed in black, were later seen placing barricades around the area.
