SEPANG — Italy’s Francesco Bagnaia won the Malaysian MotoGP sprint today with a dominant performance, while Alex Marquez finished second to secure the runner-up spot in the world championship behind his brother Marc.
Ducati’s Bagnaia led from pole and crossed the finish line in 19 minutes and 53.725 seconds at Sepang, with Marquez coming home 2.259 seconds behind to create a historic family one-two in the driver standings.
Newly crowned world champion Marc Marquez was not racing due to injury and will miss the rest of the season after suffering a collarbone injury in Indonesia earlier this month.
Fermin Aldeguer finished third, followed by Pedro Acosta and Franco Morbidelli completing the top five. The 28-year-old two-time world champion Bagnaia, who secured pole for the third consecutive year, made a clean start and led the race from start to finish.
Marquez stayed close behind but had to fight hard to reclaim second place on his Ducati after briefly dropping to third.
As the rest of the field jostled for position, Bagnaia remained in a class of his own to clinch the wire-to-wire victory.
The triumph marked redemption for Bagnaia after last year’s sprint heartbreak, when he crashed out despite setting a lap record in qualifying.
