BERLIN — Swiss Moto3 rider Noah Dettwiler is continuing to recover after his serious crash at last Sunday’s race in Malaysia, his team said, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

Dettwiler is now awake and communicating with his family and doctors.

He has left the intensive care unit and was transferred to a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, though the 20-year-old still faces a long recovery process, the team said on Friday.

The team had announced earlier in the week that Dettwiler was no longer in a life-threatening condition after undergoing several emergency surgeries.

He suffered multiple cardiac arrests and had to be resuscitated following a crash during the warm-up lap at the Malaysian Moto3 Grand Prix in Sepang.

Doctors removed his spleen to stop heavy internal bleeding. He also underwent surgery on his leg, which sustained an open fracture.

Besides that, he also suffered severe lung bruising, and X-rays later revealed a neck tear, according to the team.

Dettwiler must wear a neck brace for several weeks and will need another operation  on his leg. It remains unclear when he will be able to return to Switzerland.
