Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has highlighted a critical need to reform Malaysia's history education system to better reflect the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Speaking today, Fadillah warned that a "Malaya-centric" view of history has weakened the younger generation's appreciation for how the nation was truly formed. He called for a more balanced narrative that gives equal weight to the roles of Sarawak and Sabah.

Fadillah emphasized that understanding the principles of MA63 is essential for maintaining national unity and resolving long-standing federal-state disputes. He suggested that the Ministry of Education should incorporate more detailed modules on the formation of Malaysia into the national school syllabus. This move is intended to foster a stronger sense of shared identity among Malaysians from all regions.

The DPM's comments come amid growing calls for greater autonomy and the fulfillment of promises made during the 1963 formation. By addressing these educational gaps, the government hopes to revive the "true spirit" of the nation as envisioned by its founding fathers. The proposal has received strong support from civil society groups in East Malaysia.
