The Malaysian government plans to enforce a minimum age for social media usage starting this July to protect minors from online harm. The Deputy Minister for Communications announced the move today, reflecting rising public concern over the impact of social media on children's mental health and safety. The policy will require platforms to implement stricter age-verification tools.

This move follows similar legislative trends in Europe and the US, where governments are cracking down on "social networking functionalities" for those under 15. The Malaysian policy will involve a collaborative framework between the MCMC and major tech companies. Parents and educators have largely supported the initiative, citing a surge in cyberbullying cases.

Technical implementation remains a challenge, as many minors currently bypass age restrictions with ease. The government plans to launch a series of digital literacy campaigns alongside the new enforcement to help families navigate the change. Failure to comply could lead to heavy fines for social media corporations operating in Malaysia.
