The MADANI government has reiterated its commitment to resolving the 16 remaining claims under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud stated in the Dewan Rakyat that the current approach is more structured and institutionalized compared to previous administrations.
A new Special Coordination Committee will be established to focus specifically on the technical issues hindering the implementation of these claims. This committee will work alongside the MA63 Implementation Action Council, which is chaired by the Prime Minister. The goal is to accelerate the transfer of powers and rights back to the states of Sabah and Sarawak.
Sabah and Sarawak leaders have welcomed the announcement but remain cautious about the timeline for implementation. The remaining claims involve complex legal and financial matters, including the distribution of oil and gas revenues. The government believes that this new platform will provide the "credible and focused" negotiation space needed to finally close this long-standing chapter in Malaysian history.
