Johor police confirmed today that two small explosions were detected during an operation to extinguish a peatland fire at a plantation in Muar. The fire, which has been burning through underground peat layers, posed a significant challenge to the fire and rescue teams on the ground. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the blasts.
Authorities believe the explosions may have been caused by pockets of methane gas or old agricultural chemicals buried beneath the surface being ignited by the intense heat. Police have cordoned off the immediate area to ensure the safety of the public and the firefighting personnel as they continue to douse the remaining hotspots.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with peatland fires during the dry season. Residents in the surrounding areas have been advised to limit outdoor activities due to the localized haze and to report any new sightings of smoke to the authorities immediately.
