Heavy rain continues to pummel New Zealand’s South Island, triggering widespread flooding and landslides. A local state of emergency was declared on the Banks Peninsula near Christchurch today after fallen trees and rising river levels cut off communication and power to several communities. The nation's weather bureau has warned that a low-pressure system off the east coast may bring further bursts of heavy rain throughout the day.

This storm system previously caused significant destruction in the capital, Wellington, over the weekend before moving south. Local authorities have urged residents to stay away from swollen streams and rivers, as rapid rises and landslips remain a constant threat. Waves and dangerous sea conditions are also expected to persist along the coast until late this evening.

In the United States, recovery efforts are underway following a destructive "bomb cyclone" that hit the Pacific Northwest. The storm claimed at least two lives and left over 600,000 homes without power across Washington and California. Emergency crews are working to clear debris and restore power, but they remain on high alert as the weather system moves further inland.
