Tarique Rahman has officially taken the oath of office as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh today, marking a historic political shift for the nation. His party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), returned to power following a landslide victory in the 2026 general elections, which followed a period of intense youth-led uprisings and political turmoil. Rahman, who lived in exile for 17 years before his return, becomes the first male Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 36 years.
In his inaugural speech, Rahman addressed urgent national challenges, while outgoing interim leader Muhammad Yunus shared a farewell vision for regional trade, proposing deeper economic links between Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and India’s northeastern states. International leaders, including Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, have already extended their congratulations on the decisive electoral outcome. The new administration now faces the task of stabilizing the economy and rebuilding democratic institutions after years of unrest.
