FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed the international media today from Barranquilla, Colombia, stating he is "very reassured" about Mexico’s ability to host the 2026 World Cup despite recent spikes in cartel-related violence. The comments come just two days after the killing of a major drug cartel leader triggered widespread unrest in Guadalajara, one of the tournament's key host cities. Infantino emphasized that FIFA is monitoring the security situation closely but remains confident that the event will be "spectacular" and safe for fans.

Mexico is set to co-host the tournament alongside the United States and Canada, with the opening match scheduled for June 11, 2026. While the recent violence resulted in at least 74 deaths during military operations, FIFA officials have reiterated that their collaboration with Mexican authorities is robust. This public show of support is aimed at quelling international fears as the countdown to the world's biggest sporting event enters its final months.
