Taekwondo Malaysia has announced plans to introduce virtual taekwondo as a new medal discipline at the 2027 SEA Games, using current local competitions as a testing ground. This innovative move aims to modernise the sport and increase Malaysia’s medal prospects on the international stage. Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh confirmed that the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor will feature four additional sports: e-sports, chess, cricket, and kabaddi, bringing the total number of contested sports to 34.

In other national sports news, sprinter Danish Iftikhar has been officially inducted into the National Sports Council’s Podium Programme. This selection follows his record-breaking performances and medal wins at the previous SEA Games, securing him advanced support for his training towards the 2027 Games. Additionally, eight core teams have been selected for a long-term partnership in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL MY), signaling a major structural shift in Malaysian esports.
