A major debate has erupted on the WTA Tour at Indian Wells regarding a proposal to introduce best-of-five set matches for women starting from the quarter-finals of Grand Slams. The concept, backed by newly named USTA CEO Craig Tiley, aims to capitalize on research showing that audience interest grows as a match progresses. Tiley argues that the current best-of-three format misses out on the "epic" narratives found in men's tennis.

However, several top players have voiced strong opposition to the change. World No. 1 Iga Świątek labeled the approach "weird," questioning why the sport would want to make matches longer in an era of shrinking attention spans. Other players have expressed concerns about the physical toll on athletes and the logistical challenges it would pose for tournament scheduling.

The proposal has sparked a wider conversation about gender equality in sports and the commercial future of professional tennis. While some see it as a way to elevate the women's game to the same prestige as the men's, many athletes believe the current format is already highly successful and does not need such a radical overhaul.
