The Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP) officially announced today that they are targeting 60 gold medals for the upcoming 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma). This represents a significant increase from their previous haul of 41 golds in Sarawak. State officials described the target as realistic, noting that overall preparations are already 80% complete and the state has adopted a new "Eyes on Gold" theme to drive athlete excellence.
The target was set following a challenge from Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to convert half of the state's previous silver medals into gold. To achieve this, the state is focusing on high-performance training and providing specialized incentives for athletes who reach the podium. The 2026 edition of Sukma is expected to be a major testing ground for Malaysia's next generation of sporting talent ahead of the 2027 SEA Games.
Infrastructure upgrades for the games are also well underway, with several venues across the state undergoing renovations to meet international standards. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has emphasized that the 2026 games will prioritize inclusivity, ensuring a strong foundation for national aspirations such as securing Malaysia's first-ever Olympic gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
